De regio Arnhem-Nijmegen timmert al jaren aan de weg op het gebied van Health & High Tech, Food en Energy. Maar het risico van versnippering ligt op de loer: gemeentes, bedrijven en kennisorganisaties die langs elkaar heen bewegen in plaats van elkaar versterken. De nieuwe samenwerking tussen Briskr en The Economic Board Regio Arnhem-Nijmegen moet daar verandering in brengen.
De programmamanagers van Briskr, Martijn Kriens en Bas Doets, zitten tegenover civic entrepreneur Health & Hightech John van Sambeek en algemeen directeur Jan van Dellen van The Economic Board. Met zijn vieren kijken ze naar de nieuwe samenwerking, maar vooral naar de doelen die ze samen hebben voor de toekomst: via economische ontwikkeling de brede welvaart in de regio Arnhem-Nijmegen verbeteren.
De verdeling van de samenwerking lag voor de hand. “The Economic Board bestaat uit bestuurders, en we bepalen samen de strategie voor de regio. Waar focussen we op, in welke richting willen we ontwikkelen?”, trapt Jan af. “Maar met alleen strategie kom je er niet, je hebt ook uitvoering nodig. Briskr was al actief als consortium van partijen op het thema Health & High Tech, dus een samenwerking was heel logisch.”
Martijn legt uit dat Briskr al zag dat er in de regio te veel ideeën naast elkaar bestonden. “De uitvoering van ideeën liep steeds spaak, omdat er geen overkoepelende strategie was. Als Briskr hadden we nooit het geld kunnen regelen voor overkoepelende maatschappelijke opgaven. Maar The Economic Board had in mindere mate de mogelijkheid om op het gebied van Health & Hightech haar ideeën te vertalen naar concrete acties. Dat lost onze samenwerking nu op. Economic Board zorgt voor de strategie, en wij organiseren vanuit die strategie de organisatie van partnernetwerken.”
Eén duidelijk aanspreekpunt
Beide organisaties zijn het eens: de samenwerking gaat ook zorgen voor één duidelijk aanspreekpunt voor de Health & Hightech-gemeenschap in de regio. “Onze partners en bedrijven moeten weten waar ze moeten zijn om de samenwerking op te zoeken’, legt John uit. “Kennisinstellingen hebben overheden en bedrijven nodig, en andersom. Alleen samen kunnen we grote maatschappelijke problemen oplossen.”
“Door te zorgen voor één aanspreekpunt, creëren we duidelijkheid’, vult Bas aan. “Zo verdoe je geen tijd door met de verkeerde partners te praten. Vroeger zat het zo: de overheid zorgde voor subsidie, The Economic Board signaleerde welke thema’s belangrijk waren voor de regio, en Briskr bracht vanuit eigen doelstellingen partijen bij elkaar. Er was te weinig connectie, en daardoor bleef alles vrijblijvend.”
Omdat The Economic Board het leiderschap in de regio vertegenwoordigt, is die vrijblijvendheid nu weg. “Onze partners zijn niet alleen onderdeel van de koers, maar bepalen de koers nu ook echt”, legt Jan uit. “Zonder richting heeft actie ondernemen geen zin.”
De richting
Welke richting gaat dat dan worden, nu Briskr en Economic Board samenwerken? “Daar kunnen we kort over zijn: de brede welvaartsagenda”, legt Martijn uit. “Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het Digital Health Challenge Lab. Met dit initiatief kijken we naar de uitdaging die vergrijzing de zorg oplevert. Er moet namelijk twee keer zoveel zorg verleend gaan worden, als we niks doen. Zoals de zorg nu georganiseerd is, is dat een onmogelijke opgave. Innovaties in het proces en de technologie zijn broodnodig.”
Arnhem en Nijmegen mogen dan een stukje kleiner zijn dan de randstad, maar ook in deze regio hebben we last van grootstedelijke problematiek. Dat gaat verder dan de zorg: denk aan problemen als verkeersdrukte en krapte op de huizenmarkt. Of het probleem van onveilige en ongezonde wijken, wat resulteert in hoge zorgrekeningen. “Als we onze regio toetsen, zien we dat we het gemiddeld doen. We laten dus te veel liggen”, vertelt Jan.
En daarbij moeten de inwoners ook merken wat we doen. Zíj moeten er iets aan hebben”, vertelt Martijn. Dat gaat van heel breed, zoals het inzetten van het partnernetwerk van Briskr om economische en maatschappelijke trends te herkennen, tot heel praktisch, zoals het gebruiken van AI om kankerbehandelingen te verbeteren. “Hoe meer we gericht zijn op de inwoners, hoe meer het zichtbaar wordt wat we hier precies doen in de regio. En die zichtbaarheid hebben we heel hard nodig.” Een betere zichtbaarheid van de potentie van onze regio levert namelijk de nodige inzichten op bij het Rijk en in Europa, licht John toe. “Hoe beter we onze regio profileren, hoe meer interesse er komt van triple helix partners buiten deze regio. Als we niet zichtbaar genoeg zijn, missen we ook ondersteuning en financiering om van mooie ideeën concrete programma’s en projecten te maken.”
Die zichtbaarheid begint al op hele kleine schaal, legt Jan uit. “Ik ging laatst vanuit Economic Board naar de gemeente Berg en Dal. Zij vroegen zich af waarom ik daar was, omdat ze zo’n kleine gemeente zijn. Maar dat is de verkeerde instelling. Maar liefst 40 procent van de inwoners van Berg en Dal werkt bijvoorbeeld in de zorg: belangrijk dus om met hen in gesprek te gaan, bijvoorbeeld over digitalisering in de zorg. Moeten mensen zich laten bijscholen zodat meer zorgverlening op afstand mogelijk wordt?”
Een nieuwe boost
Met deze nieuw samenwerking gaan Briskr en The Economic Board de komende jaren het ondernemerschap en de ontwikkeling van de health- en high tech-sector een enorme boost geven. “We gaan het ecosysteem in kaart brengen en samen op zoek naar investeerders, kennis en ontbrekende schakels. Door onze regio extra zichtbaar te maken activeren we koplopers om mee te doen”, sluit Jan af. “We moeten verder komen dan een gesubsidieerd pilotproject, en dat gaat lukken met deze samenwerking. We combineren de strategie op lange termijn, met uitvoering die ondersteuning krijgt van allerlei partijen uit de regio!”
De partners van Briskr zijn Radboud Universiteit, Radboudumc, Hogeschool Arnhem-Nijmegen, provincie Gelderland, Gemeente Nijmegen, Health Valley, Oost NL, HightechNL, Noviotech campus, SMB en The Economic Board Arnhem-Nijmegen. Daarnaast wordt Briskr financieel en inhoudelijk ondersteund door diverse bedrijven in de regio.

During the Innoboot seminar on 21st of September we show 6 selected highlights of public-private projects where scientists work together with companies in translating theory into practice. They show their results and share their experience in setting up and running these projects. Examples of projects shown are in digital health, data engineering, organoids and of course AI. During the seminar there is the possibility of meeting others interested in setting up new public-private projects, from science as well as from the business side.

Whereas the triple-helix was often used as a buzzword in the past, it has now been demonstrated that with the right motivation and with a focus on shared interests, governments, education and entrepreneurs can indeed strengthen each other and be the key to stronger connected entrepreneurship. The right cooperation between groups of entrepreneurs and with strong triple helix organisations (such as Brainport in Eindhoven and the Economic Board in our region), can greatly improve the climate for the economy of today and tomorrow.
Parallel track Health: Digital Health Challenge Lab / Floor van de Watering
In Digital Health Challenge Lab, the frustrations and desires (challenges) of residents, housing associations, healthcare professionals, healthcare organisations around their (own) health, healthcare provision and the healthcare process are collected, answered and solved. We focus on solving challenges around prevention, staying at home longer without care, staying at home without professional help, reaching more patients/clients with fewer employees. All to keep healthcare manageable and affordable. On the basis of these challenges, companies can specifically develop innovative products and/or services for which there is actual demand and support. After all, a challenge is a problem with a business case.
Parallel track Health: PICgel / Lotte Gerrits, Paul Kouwer
A tremendous amount of time and effort is being invested in the development of better experimental models for drug screening and human disease modelling. However, many of these models, including organoids, are being cultured in an extracellular matrix derived from tumors of mice. This has major implications for the predictive value of such models towards human physiology and requires millions of mice each year. Paul Kouwer and Lotte Gerrits from Radboud University are ready to change this unwanted situation by providing a highly customizable synthetic alternative, that allows for culturing organoids that resemble human physiology, without animal components.
Parallel track High Tech: Nifti/ Nigel Hussey
The future of mobility could look radically different from today: think of floating cars moving autonomously throughout a city, pollution free, congestions free, safe and socially inclusive. Radboud University invented such a radical new innovative transport system, called NIFTI. However, the adoption of NIFTI is largely depending on public opinion and implementation strategies. Prof. Arnoud Lagendijk will discuss openly the implications of the system and public mind change that would be required to use such a novel technology. Personal mobility ownership, social acceptance, user incentives, trustworthiness, inclusivity are among some of the aspects that will be challenged in this interactive session. Will you help shaping the future of mobility?
Parallel track High Tech: ICAI lab / Colin Jacobs
The Dutch healthcare system has reached the limits of its capacity. For instance, radiologists spend countless hours on interpreting the ever increasing amount of imaging that is being performed in hospitals. However, many repetitive tasks can potentially be taken over by AI-algorithms, allowing them to focus on the most complex cases. The MERAI Lab, part of ICAI, is working on the development of such AI-supported tools, to support radiologist in the field of lung oncology. Dr. Colin Jacobs will tell about their endeavors towards solutions that perform at a level close to medical professionals, as well as the efforts that are being made to increase the adoption of such tools in society.
Parallel track High Tech: Datalab
In DEMAND (Data Engineering & Management for Data Chains), HAN, Fontys and Saxion, along with several business partners (including NovioTech Campus), collaborate on knowledge development regarding an accessible, easily deployable “toolbox” (methods, techniques, tools, good practices) for achieving good data availability and data quality in data chains. Such data chains are necessary for various data-intensive applications, ranging from classical information systems and Data Science to Digital Twins and AI. The three pillars are Data Engineering, Data Management, and AI Engineering. The project is in the initial phase and will go live in the fall of 2023. The workshop will be facilitated by Kees van de Sant.
Parallel track High Tech: RF Knowledge Lab
In this session, we will provide a brief overview of the Radio Frequency Knowledge Lab, including its concept, partners, activities, and future plans.Why it is important for it to exist: What can this existing technology add to what already exists, and what makes it so special?Brief overview of what we have done: The project started in 2022 and has already completed various activities. There are some preliminary results to report.Current developments: What are we currently working on, and how can we further expand the activities?Future plans: The first phase has been completed, and we are exploring possibilities to initiate the next phase. A small consortium has been formed to drive forward this development.
Together with Klaus Werner from PinkRF and Marco Koelink from CITC, we will shape this session. We will actively engage with the audience to explore ways to make this a success.
We invite scientists as well as companies to join us this seminar. During the program there is ample time to meet and create new connections between science and businesses as the start of new cooperations.

June 30 the Embassy of the Philippines together with Briskr organised a visit of the Philippines trade minister to Nijmegen and the Noviotech campus. Between the semiconductor sector in the Netherlands and in the Philippines are strong cooperations, already since 1980. Companies like Nexperia, Ampleon and Gallium have a strong presence in both countries.
To strengthen ties and find new opportunities the ministry of trade and the ministry of energy organised a round table discussion. Present were the Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya, Minister for trade Alfredo Pascual as well as representatives from the semicon industry in the Philippines. From the Nijmegen region the Alderman John Brom, Director Economic Board Jan van Dellen and Martijn Kriens from Briskr where present as well as Charles Smit, chairman Holland Semiconductors and Willem Endhoven, director of HightechNL.
Part of the followup will be a trade mission to the Philippines in Oktober.
Would space and time exist if the universe were empty?
Yes, according to Newton, father of the popular imagination of absolute space and time as a stage on which the cosmic play unfolds. Nope, says Leibniz; they are merely mathematical relationships between objects, not real entities. Modern physics is cleaved by a similar absolute-relational divide between quantum theory and Einstein’s gravitational theory of curved spacetime. A unified, more fundamental understanding is sought to unravel the mysteries of black holes and the big bang, and for shedding light on the true nature of spacetime. To this end, some of the world’s brightest minds will be gathering in Nijmegen this summer for the Quantum Gravity 2023 conference.
Three of its invited speakers will share their mind-boggling ideas and the newest insights during a special summer edition of the Science Café at the border of the Waal. Thomas Hertog (KU Leuven) will take us along on his quest with Stephen Hawking, venturing far back to the universe’s primordial roots. By trading the traditional God’s-eye view for an insider’s perspective we may discern a deep sort of evolution in which the physical laws themselves transform until particles, forces, and even time itself fades away. The fundamental role of perspective and relations is explored in Flaminia Giacomini’s (ETH Zurich) thought experiments. By seeing the quantum world from multiple points of view at once, she will demonstrate that – upon interaction – a shared spacetime reality is taking shape. Daniele Oriti (LMU Munich) investigates how exactly spacetime and the entire cosmos can emerge from entities that themselves are not in space and time. He’ll discuss the conceptual and philosophical aspects of this endeavor, for which our basic notions and intuition prove futile. We need new eyes to see the universe!

Afgelopen 20 juni is het Business Angels netwerk weer bij elkaar gekomen op slot Doddendael waar vier startups een pitch konden geven om voor financiering en/of ondersteuning van ervaren ondernemers. De vier startups dit keer waren:
Predica-diagnostics: Dit is een platform voor de ontwikkeling van diagnostiek en het bepalen van de beste behandeling bij kanker. De eerste focus ligt op het aantonen van het risico op baarmoederhalskanker als gevolg van het HPV-virus. Veel ontwikkeling is gedaan en de komende periode gaan ze steeds dichter naar de markt (https://www.predica-diagnostics.com/).
Quriegen: Een technologie door het sequencen van een cel en daarmee in kaart brengen op welke manier de cel reageert op behandeling. Met behulp van deze technologie en data-analyse is het mogelijk om sneller inzicht te krijgen in effectiviteit van nieuwe behandelmethoden (https://quriegen.com/).
Memidis ontwikkelt een nieuwe behandeling voor Lichen Sclerosus (een ernstige huidaandoening). Op dit moment bestaat er nog geen behandeling. Het middel is op basis van bestaande en toegelaten grondstoffen waardoor de trial fase relatief beperkt is (https://memidis.nl/).
Cognauship: technologie om sleepboten en binnenvaart te meten qua brandstof verbruik en CO2 emissies. Het is stand alone technologie die niet aangesloten hoeft te zijn aan het vaartuigbesturingssysteem waardoor bij alle schepen in te voeren is (https://cognauship.com/)
Het waren vier interessante cases met de nadruk op complexe diagnostiek en behandeling in de gezondheidszorg. Hoewel de opkomst wat lager was dan normaal, door de vele vakanties van de Angels, heeft deze bijeenkomst geleid tot diverse follow-up afspraken voor ondersteuning van de start-ups.
De volgende bijeenkomst is op 14 november op het prachtige slot Doddendael als nieuwe thuishonk van het Business Angels Netwerk Nijmegen BANN)! Ook dan zijn er weer vier pitches van startende ondernemers die nieuwe kansen in de Health en Hightech sector in Nijmegen regio verkennen en uitbouwen.
De BANN wordt georganiseerd door Briskr in samenwerking met Oost NL en ondersteund door de supporting partners BDO, Catalyse, EP&C, JLABS, Poelmann van den Broek, Qserve group en de Rabobank.

Samen startups verder helpen
Tot vorig jaar was Briskr een consortium van diverse partijen met Oost NL als penvoerder. Sinds december 2022 is Briskr een stichting met bestuurders uit de regio; Radboudumc, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, NXP Nederland, Rabobank Gelderland-Zuid en VNO-NCW zijn vertegenwoordigd. Kriens: “Onze koers bepalen we zoals voorheen in overleg met ons brede partnernetwerk, waaronder Oost NL.” Sijbers: “We spreken elkaar wekelijks en het samenwerken gaat zo makkelijk en soepel, dat is allemaal niet zo ingewikkeld. We willen allemaal iets doen voor de ondernemers in de regio, dus we hebben hetzelfde doel. We bekijken bijvoorbeeld samen welke programma’s we kunnen ontwikkelen en welke fondsen in aanmerkingen komen voor bepaalde startups. “
Complexiteit in zorg groot
Oost NL en Briskr vinden elkaar onder meer in de Vroegefasefinanciering Gelderland. Kriens: “Met de investeringstak van Oost NL werken we intensief samen op gebied van vroegefasefinanciering. In de Health-sector kost alles wat je naar de markt wilt brengen veel tijd en geld; vroegefasefinanciering past daar heel goed bij.” Dat leidde onder meer tot een financiering voor het Nijmeegse Glycotherapeutics, dat werkt aan nieuwe behandelingen tegen kanker.
Sijbers: “Oost NL heeft een bredere geografische blik, dat maakt het voor Briskr makkelijker om in gesprek te komen met (internationale) partijen die vroege financieringen doen. ”
Kriens: “De complexiteit in de zorg is vele malen groter dan in de consumentenmarkt. Gemiddeld is de tijd van idee naar marktintroductie meer dan 7 jaar. Je moet als bedrijf een lange adem hebben. Soms heb je al € 100 miljoen uitgegeven vóór je op de markt bent; zo duur zijn clinical trials en alles wat erbij komt kijken. Heel anders dan wanneer je bijvoorbeeld een app ontwikkelt. Bij ‘normale’ business heb je als bedrijf te maken met drie relaties: de wetenschap – voor de innovatie-, de producent en de consument. Zodra de consument verandert in patiënt wordt het complex. De patiënt betaalt niet zelf, maar de verzekeraar. Maar de verzekeraar gaat niet over de beslissing van het gebruik; daar gaat de arts over. Ook de overheid speelt een rol met wet- en regelgeving vanwege de veiligheid. Met overheid, zorgverzekeraar en zorgorganisaties zit je zo aan 15 relaties en dat is best complex.” Gekscherend voegt Kriens toe: “Tegen alle startups die iets in de Health-sector willen doen roep ik altijd als eerste: ‘niet doen!’ Pas als ze eigenwijs zijn om toch door te zetten hebben ze een kans.”
Hub and spoke-model
Kriens is fan van het hub and spoke-model waarbij hij Oost NL ziet als hub en Briskr als een figuurlijke spaak. “Oost NL is als grote partij heel goed in een aantal specialismen, bijvoorbeeld investeringsfondsen. Dat kunnen wij in de regio Nijmegen nooit op die manier van de grond krijgen, daar heb je grotere schaal voor nodig. Briskr is goed in het identificeren en begeleiden van bedrijven die in de regio ontstaan. Het hub en spoke– model zie ik als een goede basis voor de samenwerking; we zijn als het ware tot elkaar veroordeeld.”
Een mooi voorbeeld van het genoemde model in de praktijk vindt Kriens het Business Angels Netwerk Nijmegen (BANN). Business angels zijn particuliere financiers die durven te investeren in ondernemers met ambitie. Kriens: “Samen met Koen van den Berg en Bart Heuts hebben we BANN gestart en ontwikkelen we het verder. Oost NL organiseert zaken die je op lokaal regionaal niveau minder makkelijk voor elkaar krijgt. Een netwerk van zo’n 150 business angels opbouwen; dat zou voor ons lastig zijn. Samen kunnen we relevante startups uit de regio aandragen en zitten we in de haarvaten van de regio.”
Martijn Sijbers: “Briskr zet al haar energie op de regio Arnhem-Nijmegen, dan weet je meer dan een organisatie die zijn aandacht moet verdelen over twee provincies. Oost NL heeft de voelsprieten maar de details zitten in organisaties zoals Briskr.”
Kriens: “We werken nu zo’n drie jaar succesvol samen aan BANN en daarmee hebben we behoorlijk wat startups geholpen. Drie keer per jaar organiseren we een event waarbij vier startups mogen pitchen om angel-kapitaal binnen te halen.” Sijbers vult aan: “Daarnaast houden we een keer per jaar de Investor Day voor investeerders, ondernemers en wetenschappers die nadenken over een bedrijf. Dit betreft een samenwerking tussen Briskr, Radboud en Oost NL en is een invited only event.”
Briskr Academy
Kriens: “Wij ondersteunen startups van ideefase tot volwassen bedrijf en in het hele traject werken we samen met Oost NL. Via allerlei financieringsinstrumenten en inhoudelijke programma’s zoals het Investor Readiness Program en Customer Development Program. Daarnaast hebben we de Briskr Academy en geven we zo’n 30 workshops per jaar gericht op ondernemerschap, een gevarieerd aanbod. Dat doen we samen met supporting partners: grote bedrijven in de regio die ook belang hebben bij een goede ondernemerschapscultuur, zoals een advocatenkantoor en een bureau dat zich bezighoudt met certificering in de zorg.” Sijbers: “Oost NL heeft ook wel eens een workshop verzorgd, bijvoorbeeld over de waardering van je bedrijf en hoe investeerders denken.” Kriens: “We hebben netwerk van zo’n 300 bedrijven die op regelmatige basis naar die workshops komen.”
