What’s the value of your company?
Valuation of a company is almost always hard. Sentiments play a role, but also the fact that there are many alternative ways to look at the value of a company. This is of course even more true if you run a start-up as the past offers little foundation to determine future performance and worth. But for all growth stages valuation is immensely important since external financing is in most cases the only way to grow. Therefore, it’s necessary that you understand how valuation works, that you know how best to prepare for negotiations and how to determine the conditions. This is what this workshop offers. It helps create a better understanding of company valuation and investment terms as well as the process to reach an investment deal.

Understanding the other site of the table
Investors and entrepreneurs both want a deal that makes them happy. In order to have fruitful discussions about the valuation of your company, it’s therefore important for both sides of the table to have a good understanding of each other’s perspective. What does an investor look for in a business case? What is expected from you as an entrepreneur? But also, what can you expect from an investor? Now during the deal making phase, but also later on as a shareholder in your company? Instead of looking for a bigger slice of the pie, the goal should be to make the pie bigger for everyone at the table.

Legal issues regarding the participation of investors
When an investor and entrepreneur cooperate, in principle, they have the same objectives. But that’s not the case on all aspects of the cooperation. For instance regarding an exit or the relationship between the management board and the general meeting of shareholders. These are some of the most important issues in the cooperation between an entrepreneur and an investor. Thorough thought on these issues upfront contribute to a smooth cooperation between entrepreneur and an investor.

Out of air, water and sunlight

Simply obtaining fuels out of plain air, water and sunlight, wouldn’t that be awesome?! In fact, this is a reality in the making! As our fossil-fuel addicted lifestyle produces too much greenhouse gasses, sustainable energy sources like the sun are of particular interest. Now that electricity production through solar panels and wind turbines has seriously taken off, storage is increasingly becoming a point of focus. For easy long-term storage and transportation stable, energy-dense fuels are needed. But how to convert solar into chemical energy? To do so, scientists are looking to the photosynthesis in plants. Numerous projects are currently working on imitating and improving these green refineries for making CO2-neutral solar fuels.

On Wednesday March 29 these exciting developments will be central in the Science Café, when three of the field’s key researchers will offer us a peek into the fascinating science and discuss their different approaches to solar-to-fuel conversion. Joost Reek (UvA) and his team scrutinize the intricate photosynthesis process in order to optimize catalysis for efficient splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen. Gerard van Rooij (DIFFER, MU) takes a plasma chemical approach to dissociate CO2 into CO which then can be used for making fuels such as kerosine. Klaas Hellingwerf (UvA, Photanol) utilizes the power of photosynthetic cyanobacteria, genetically engineering their metabolism for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Spin-off Photanol has already a demo plant in operation in which these algae are put to work. Alongside the science, discussions and tasty drinks, this evening HarryKatur will juice some groovy tunes out of his electrically powered machines for proper conversion into (bio)chemical energy!

Speeding up the development process

Development of new medicines is a lengthy and laborious process. The time it takes from initial discovery of a working molecule to treating a patient is more than 10 years and more than 2,5 billion dollars. Just the clinical phase takes up more than 7 years in this process. If you are lucky… This long development and approval process is not only extremely expensive but also leads to a much slower adaptation of new treatments.

At this moment there are a lot of new approaches to speeding up the development process of new drugs. From parallelization of development, AI to select the best candidates, organs on a chip or even detailed digital twins to calculate the effects of molecules on humans before they are really applied in reality.

The Molecule2Business 2023 event will dive into new approaches to speed up the process of bringing new pharmaceuticals to the market.

Psychopathy has a public image of violence and crime, but research shows that this doesn’t always have to be the case. Psychopaths can read other people well and predict what they are going to do. They’re also known to be less empathetic, though skilled at manipulating others. Can these characteristic features be traced back to differences in the brain? Possibly psychopaths learn differently than non-psychopaths, or are there differences in sensitivity to reward and punishment? It is known that there is a genetic component to psychopathy, but what other factors might contribute to its development? And what is known about effective treatments for those whose lives are affected by their psychopathy?

On Monday evening March 6, experts in forensic psychology Robbert-Jan Verkes and Josanne van Dongen will discuss (in Dutch) in the Science Café recent developments in neurobiological research on psychopathy. Verkes (RU, Pompe Foundation) connects findings from scientific research with the clinical practice of forensic psychiatry. Among other things, he studies punishment and aggression, looking at specific brain regions such as the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. Through his work as a psychiatrist he can share vivid examples of psychopath treatment. Van Dongen (EUR) studies the psychopathic personality and how this relates to aggression. She maps the psychopathic brain by means of electrophysiology and brain modulation techniques, and also looks at the role of empathy. These neurobiological insights are used to develop interventions against aggression. During this evening, Penvriend will break the tension, providing a feel-good mood with their dreamy indie-folk.

Healthcare is a peoples business. Keeping the patient not just in the center of the attention of innovation but also as a co-driver in your development process of is of paramount importance. But still, all too often businesses forget to involve patients in the core of their innovations and pay for this mistake in the end.

Our SMB meeting of April 20 focuses on some best practices on how to involve patients.

First speaker is Erik Verkaar from Zorgbelang, an organisation helping others to involve patients in their processes. He will inform us not just how to deal with empowered patients but also patients with low health and literacy capabilities. Our second speaker, Chris van den Brink, is researcher & patient ambassador for Enzyre. Enzyre develops near patient diagnostics for blood coagulation. Chris will talk about the importance of developing from the perspective of how the patient will use the technology in real live.

We will conclude the event with networking, drinks & bites.

Live event
This event will be organized in a live setting at Noviotech Campus in Nijmegen (building M, Mee&Greet area). A few days before the event we will send an email with practical information on directions/parking (sender = smb@radboudumc.nl). You might have to check your spam box.
