Chip Integration Technology Center (CITC) today announced the appointment of Mark Luke Farrugia as its new general manager. As of March 1, Farrugia will take over the responsibilities from general manager Jeroen van den Brand, who fulfilled the role ad interim.

Farrugia has an extensive background in the semiconductor backend industry. Prior to this appointment, he worked for almost sixteen years at NXP Semiconductors and most recently as technical director at Nexperia Semiconductors.

He explains why he is now switching to CITC: “Innovation work within semiconductor packaging has been my greatest professional passion for the past 27 years. Breakthrough innovation requires a dedicated organization having the right focus, knowledge and passion and determination, and I see this in CITC”.

Luke Farrugia

In his position as general manager, Farrugia will be responsible for the further development of CITC as an internationally distinctive and well-recognized center of semiconductor and photonic chip packaging technology. “CITC is a young organization, and therefore needs to put itself on the semiconductor packaging map. This should be done by understanding the needs and expectations of the industry, building and enhancing the right competences, and by collaborating with other organizations. I look forward to working with the CITC team, as well as scouting and mentoring the next generation, dealing with the highly complex puzzle of understanding what the various industry stakeholders would like to achieve, and ultimately, to delivering results that have a meaningful impact on the industry.”

Roel Fonville, chair of the CITC Supervisory Board, expresses that this is what qualified Farrugia for the position at CITC: “The Supervisory Board is enthusiastic about the appointment of Mark Luke Farrugia as general manager of CITC. Mark Luke has substantive expertise, an up-to-date business network, entrepreneurial thinking and a strong drive to further internationalize CITC as an innovation center in the field of packaging.”

The position of general manager became vacant following the sad passing of CITC founder and first general manager Barry Peet in July 2022.

The Netherlands, world leading country in RF Technology
Radio Frequency (RF) technology knowledge is significantly strong developed in the
Netherlands. No less than thirty Dutch companies are highly specialized in RF technology
and its applications.
The Netherlands is home to many great inventions in RF technology. Bluetooth and WIFI,
worldwide embraced and indispensable innovations, have their origins and crucial
development in the Netherlands. And, with the knowledge and expertise of Dutch RF
engineers, so much more can become possible with RF technology. Welcome to the world of
RF solutions!

RF offers solutions you probably have not thought of yet
RF is already widely used and the number of Radio Frequency (wireless) applications will
explode in the coming years. Wireless and contactless connected, will be the new standard.
Think of IoT applications, medical imaging such as MRI or, autonomous driving, and adaptive
cruise control.
But there is more. RF offers excellent solutions for the necessary transition from fossil fuels
to green energy. RF is clean and sustainable. In addition, it is ultra-accurate, hygienic, and
highly controllable. For sensing, detecting, and heating RF is the most efficient technique that
we know of. It can and should be used in more and different kinds of industries.

A few examples
Energy: RF is clean, sustainable, fast, and controllable. In all cases where we use gas
nowadays, RF is an excellent replacement.
• Food: Heating becomes more hygienic (contactless), more accurate, and faster with RF
technology.
Health: RF technology offers more accurate sensing and imaging, more fidelity, and more
detail. Thanks to these features, severe diseases can be detected at an earlier
stage.
Logistics: RF offers opportunities for better capacity utilization in the available space through
precise positioning capabilities and more secure movement. Think of moving
vehicles and loading and unloading in large complex distribution centers.
Mobility: Extremely accurate RF sensing makes it possible to apply more autonomous traffic
flows thanks to Car-to-car interaction, adaptive cruise control, and the interaction
between cars and traffic instruments such as traffic lights and signaling signs. This
contributes to a better flow of vehicles and therefore directly to better living
conditions in urban areas.

And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. RF developments can also contribute to data
transfer, security and safety, climate, transport etc. RF Technology can contribute to your
business as well.

Grootbanken slaan handen ineen

Starting a business or growing it when things are going well: there are challenges on all sides of entrepreneurship. How do you achieve your ambitions as quickly and efficiently as possible? Often it helps to get support and feedback from people with experience and expertise in this area.

Growth, what does that mean for your employees? Or: at what point in your business do you need an extra set of hands to work on your goals? Lizanne Jakobs, founder of Brilliant Work, answers questions like these every day. “We don’t advise on your area of expertise – we’re obviously not going to tell a pharmaceutical company how to develop medication. We are here for short- and long-term business strategies.”

Partner at Briskr

Brilliant Work recently became an official Briskr partner, but has been available to entrepreneurs for a long time. “We have known Briskr for a long time. We have been coming to meetings and giving workshops in collaboration with Briskr for years now. We just formalised the partnership to make the collaboration more intensive.”

Briskr member companies are of interest to Brilliant Work for a specific reason: their growth potential. “We help companies that are looking for change, in the form of business growth and internationalisation. The start-ups and scale-ups in the life science and high-tech sectors are excellent examples in this respect. These companies not only have tremendous growth potential, but often do so at a fast pace. Most of the time they do this internationally, which is one of our areas of expertise.”

Most business owners are not trained to be entrepreneurs but excel in their profession. “As a scientist, you use a completely different skill set from that of an entrepreneur, and that is where as experienced coaches we can help avoid pitfalls.” Ultimately, the goal is to help all Briskr-affiliated entrepreneurs to get the true and full potential out of their companies.

Coaching and advice

Coaching with Brilliant Work always starts with a good intake. “It might seem obvious, but it is crucial to the advice you get”, says Lizanne. “We need to have a good understanding of where you are with your business. What is going well, what do you want to keep this way, and what do you want to change? Once we know that, your ambitions are the next step.”

Not all entrepreneurs have those written down. “It always works well to write them down in a specific and measured way. But having ambitions is not enough; you must have a clear plan of how you will get there and have enough money to do so and obviously we help our clients write the right plans, pitch decks or budgets to do so. Subsidies are also an important area that is overlooked to help grow the company without capital dilution. Coaches who know which subsidies to use when, help you to make the right decisions.

“Brilliant works tailors their coaching, advice and training to fit the company. For most clients, including start-ups, we offer one-on-one sessions. For larger companies, sometimes we train the entire office staff at once. Our sessions are often about two hours long, but vary on the client’s needs. Our engagements normally result in an action plan to realise your ambitions and we connect you to the right people and government officials to help you carry it out.

Her own experiences

Before Lizanne founded Brilliant Work, she worked as an SME coach in the UK. “Before starting my work as a business coach, I had worked as a sales and account manager for multiple European companies. I enjoyed always being on the road, but at that point it was not compatible with family life any more. As a coach, I could work from any location.” In a group with 50 coaches, she gained an incredible amount of experience. When she moved back to the Netherlands in 2014, she missed an agency that offered advice with an eye for both sides of a business.

What does that mean? “On the one hand, you have your goals, your KPI’s, and your processes. Those are all tangible things, the ‘hard facts’. But there also is your customer focus, communication, leadership and other skills. That is the ‘soft side’ of a business. A good consultancy business helps you get both to the right level, because you want a balanced business.” Lizanne’s solution to the lack of coaching companies with a broad vision? Starting her own agency!

“Of course, I was in a unique situation. I had already owned a coaching business in the UK, and had done so in a setting where I felt very supported and had lots of people I could ask for advice. . Starting a business by yourself is not easy. The most important tip I give entrepreneurs? Not losing yourself in your day-to-day work. Your daily and weekly workload can slowly eat up all your time, leaving you with no time to work on the things that will really grow and transform your business. That is a missed opportunity! By blocking out time with us, you will make huge steps towards having a business that works well, grows nationally and internationally and where you enjoy your own role.”

On the 5th of October, over 100 scientists, investors and entrepreneurs came together at the second Radboudumc Investment Day. The event, jointly hosted by Radboudumc, Oost NL and Briskr, aims to accelerate innovation in healthcare by creating new business opportunities and forging strong public-private partnerships.

This years’ edition featured an inspiring line-up of speakers with broad expertise in (bio)medical innovation, med tech and AI. Together, they touched upon the main challenges and opportunities that scientists and entrepreneurs face when they try to bring their research to the market. One key takeaway was the importance for scientist and (potential) investors to get in touch early on in the research process. That makes it easier to align applied research with societal needs and lowers the chance of promising start-ups folding in the infamous ‘valley of death’.

In addition to the plenary sessions, attendees had ample opportunity to partake in one-on-one meetings, some of which were pre-arranged via a digital match-up platform.

The spirit of the event was aptly summarized by Constantijn van Oranje, special envoy at TechLeap, during the panel discussion at the end. He emphasized the importance of creating a culture at academic institutions that actively supports and even celebrates entrepreneurial scientists. For while the academic pursuit of knowledge is a valuable endeavor in itself, translating the fruits of research into market success and societal impact is equally important and that’s why we will organize the event next year as well.

International knowledge workers and students, as well as their employers and knowledge institutions, now have a one-stop shop on the Radboud University campus for any matters related to making their stay in the region more pleasant. The Lifeport Welcome Centre at Huize Heyendael was officially opened on 19 September.

The Lifeport Welcome Center (LWC) is staffed by Radboud University employees.  In October, they will be joined at the Huize Heyendael location by employees from the municipality of Nijmegen, and from 1 January 2023 onwards, by colleagues from the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst, IND). From then onwards, the municipality of Nijmegen and IND will join forces to offer a one-stop shop of governmental services related to registration and residence.

Expanding services over time

The Lifeport Welcome Center is a single central point where international knowledge workers, students, their employers and family members can go for government services (offered by the municipality and IND), private services (such as a welcome programme and “family support” programme), and social activities. They will receive a welcome package, and information on matters such as health insurance, banking, and filing income tax returns in the Netherlands.

In time, these services can be expanded to include support in finding housing, and various training courses. The Lifeport Welcome Center will initially run for a period of two years, following which an evaluation will take place.

Wijnand Hemelaar, Director of Lifeport Welcome Center and coordinator of the Radboud University Global Staff Services: “This is a new initiative in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region. We expect it to make an important contribution towards attracting and retaining international talent in the region.”

Regional initiative

Lifeport Welcome Center is an initiative of the Economic Board, the province of Gelderland, and the municipality of Nijmegen, based on the regional desire to attract and retain more international talent for the region. The project is financed by Radboud University, the Province of Gelderland, the HAN University of Applied Sciences, the Economic Board, and a number of private parties that offer services at a fee (banks, insurers, brokers, etc.). Companies and institutions in the region can also make use of the Welcome Center’s services at a fee. Daniël Wigboldus, President of the Executive Board of Radboud University and member of the Economic Board: “At the Radboud campus, we find it important to join forces with the municipality of Nijmegen, the province, IND, the HAN University of Applied Sciences, and all other Lifeport partners to attract the necessary international talent to the region and keep them here.”

In addition to the Lifeport Welcome Center @Radboud University, other locations for welcoming international talent may be opened in the Nijmegen-Arnhem-Wageningen region in future. The Lifeport Welcome Center is also working in close collaboration with the Welcome Center Food Valley in Wageningen to share knowledge and develop joint programmes, thus serving the entire region.

Chip Integration Technology Center (CITC) and Henkel announced today that the organizations have formalized an agreement to collaborate on the development of high-thermal die attach solutions for RF and power electronics. Under the terms of the partnership, Henkel will supply commercialized and developmental pressureless sintering die attach formulations and CITC will provide testing and analysis of the materials within next-generation package designs.

CITC’s Thermal High-Performance Packaging program focuses on thermo-mechanical design strategies and device packaging platforms that integrate low-stress, high-reliability rugged interconnect solutions. As die attach and molding materials are often limiting factors for the optimal operation of RF and power packages, Henkel is the ideal partner or innovation in this application area.

In addition to ongoing work in its state-of-the-art R&D centers, Henkel wants to accelerate time-to-market for its semiconductor packaging materials through strategic relationships across industry, government, and academia. CITC, which collaborates with leading power and RF device packaging companies, provides a unique opportunity to characterize and analyze Henkel’s high-thermal die attach formulations as an enabler for leading-edge device designs.

“Henkel’s pressureless sintering die attach materials are already proven in certain mobile applications,” explained Ramachandran “Ram” Trichur, the company’s Global Market Segment Head, Semiconductor Packaging Materials. “We want to extend that success to other sectors such as automotive, where large, high-power chips are the norm. Our pressureless sintering solutions are unique because they deliver the simple, low-stress processability of conventional die attach adhesives and very high thermal conductivity capabilities. The work at CITC will augment our in-house projects, allowing additional performance and reliability validation.”

The new die attach technology has the potential to enable the replacement of lead (Pb) within RF and power semiconductor devices that incorporate larger die on copper leadframes, allowing the introduction of high operating temperature gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) power die technologies. Many of CITC’s partners are actively integrating these new chip structures, making the cooperative project an excellent proving ground for Henkel’s pressureless sintering platform.

“In Henkel, we have found a material innovator that will enable the development of power and RF devices with a holistic approach that leverages the latest in die attach technology,” concluded CITC General Manager, Jeroen van den Brand. “With many major power device manufacturers based in Europe, and in Nijmegen in particular, we view this partnership as vital to satisfying the current and future demands within these important market sectors.”
