Pitch to Win: a winning pitch

In David Beckett’s workshop Pitch to Win on Thursday December 14th we worked very practically on formulating our own winning pitch. It was his 997th workshop about Pitching he told us.

One exercise was to write down in a maximum of 4 (short) sentences your handshake pitch. We learned how to leave a first impression that is not about you, but about what you do.

In practical steps we learned how to make a winning pitch using the ‘power of three’, why you need the rational and non-rational aspect in a pitch (and a bit of humor). And use all the feedback you can get!

Using a strict timer, we had to try and think concisely. We tested this in short pitches to each other in breakout rooms. David is an exciting and well-known speaker who motivates all participants. We look back on a fun workshop where we learned a lot.

Faculty of Impact has launched

‘Faculty of Impact’ has just launched: a brand new program aimed at turning promising research into a business with impact.

Faculty of Impact is adopted from / inspired by three US programs: Cyclotron Road at UC Berkeley, Runway at Cornell Tech and Activate at MIT. All three use a similar format: researchers receive a grant for two years, to focus 100% of their time on turning their research into a business with impact. On top of that they get access to research labs, entrepreneurship training, coaching over the course of two years, support in the search for funding (both government grants and investor capital) and support in their search for customers.

The focus of the first call is on sustainability and the energy transition. Applications are now open – de deadline is 18th January 2022. Extra subsidy opportunity Digipro

There is now an extra subsidy opportunity within Digipro. In an extra call 6 to 7 Module 5 (innovation) projects can be financed. Make use of this unique opportunity by submitting a pre-application before 15 December and who knows, maybe you can start your cross-border innovation project early 2022.

 

The most important conditions are:

  • Only M5 (innovation projects) are possible within this Digipro call.
  • The maximum project costs are €75,000 and the grant rate is 40%.
  • Digipro stands for borderless digital innovations, your project has to contribute to this objective.
  • It must involve a fully-fledged partnership at its own expense and risk. The budget for one partner is maximum 70% of the total. The main applicant is an SME, with at least one partner on the other side of the border.
  • In contrast to previous calls, both applicant and partner may come from the entire INTERREG VA area, thus also from the Northern provinces.
  • A preproposal must be submitted before 15-12-2021 (17:00 CET). However, if you are interested, please contact us before 1 December.
  • Projects can start in Q1 2022 (exact date to be announced) and have to be completed before 1-10-2022.

Nederland moet Valorisatie-hotspot van Europa worden

Kennisinstellingen komen met nieuw plan om impact te vergroten

 

Nederland moet de Valorisatie-hotspot van Europa worden. Deze ambitie hebben de Nederlandse universiteiten, universitair medisch centra en TNO. Samen lanceren de kennisinstellingen op 1 november een plan om het nationaal valorisatie-ecosysteem te versterken. Het doel: in 2030 een valorisatiesysteem dat tot de absolute wereldtop behoort. VSNU-voorzitter Pieter Duisenberg: “De samenleving, het bedrijfsleven, studenten en wetenschappers willen steeds vaker wetenschappelijke kennis in de praktijk brengen. Het huidige ecosysteem voor deze valorisatie is te klein om die vraag aan te kunnen. Daarom zetten we samen de volgende stap zodat investeringen in kennis en innovatie nog meer opleveren voor Nederland.”

 

Kennis en innovatie als antwoord op de maatschappelijke uitdagingen

De maatschappelijke uitdagingen waar Nederland, Europa en de wereld voor staan kunnen niet opgelost worden zonder wetenschappelijke kennis en innovatie. Een sterk nationaal valorisatie-ecosysteem versnelt het in de praktijk brengen van de oplossingen die de wetenschap biedt. Iedere euro die de overheid investeert in kennis en innovatie levert vier euro op. Dat gaat niet vanzelf. Een sterk valorisatie-ecosysteem waarin kennisinstellingen en het bedrijfsleven intensief samenwerken, zorgt dat wetenschappelijke kennis daadwerkelijk en snel gebruikt kan worden voor onze toekomst.

 

Naar een valorisatie-ecosysteem met een stevig fundament

Met de juiste keuzes kan Nederland in de tweede helft van het decennium niet alleen tot de Europese top behoren, maar zelfs dé valorisatie-hotspot van Europa worden. Margriet Schneider, voorzitter NFU: “In 2030 moet Nederland een nationaal valorisatie-ecosysteem hebben dat zich kan meten met de wereldtop. Doordat Nederland een relatief klein land is met een centrale ligging, wetenschap van wereldklasse en een uitstekende infrastructuur, hebben wij een enorme potentie. Die potentie willen we verzilveren.” De Nederlandse kennisinstellingen stellen de volgende drie doelen voor om in 2030 de valorisatie-hotspot van Europa te worden:

 

1.    Een landelijk Knowledge Transfer (KT) systeem van wereldklasse. De Knowledge Transfer Offices (KTO’s), die wetenschappers ondersteunen bij valorisatie gaan internationale best practices in kaart brengen en in Nederland invoeren. In het landelijke KT-systeem werken kennisinstellingen samen aan expertise, opleiding en training en maken zij een heldere taakverdeling om maatschappelijk uitdagingen rond bijvoorbeeld veiligheid, zorg en duurzaamheid effectief aan te pakken.

 

2.    Samenwerking binnen het ecosysteem versterken. Intensievere samenwerking tussen kennisinstellingen, investeerders en bedrijven om startups te ondersteunen, met uniforme richtlijnen over intellectueel eigendom.

 

3.    Samen gericht uitbreiden van de KTO-capaciteit. Versterken van de ondernemende cultuur binnen de wetenschap en, met alle kennisinstellingen gezamenlijk, het screenen, scouten en ondersteunen van spin-outs op basis van valoriseerbare kennis.

 

Uiteindelijk zorgen deze acties niet alleen voor een beter valorisatie-ecosysteem. Het verbetert het vestigingsklimaat van Nederland, maakt ons land aantrekkelijker voor ondernemend en onderzoekend talent én bestaande investeringen zoals het Nationaal Groeifonds krijgen een grotere impact.

 

Hoe nu verder

In het vandaag gepresenteerde plan stellen VSNU, NFU en TO2 een 7-jarige regeling voor. In deze periode kan de bestaande basis verder worden uitgebouwd. Allereerst zal worden nagegaan welke concrete versterkingen, kwaliteitsimpulsen en interventies nodig zijn. Tegelijkertijd worden kennisinstellingen, regio’s en partners gevraagd hun valorisatieambities concreet te maken. De komende jaren zullen de VSNU, NFU en TO2 volgens het plan jaarlijks de activiteiten en resultaten van het valorisatie-ecosysteem monitoren en daarover rapporteren. Maandag 1 november wordt het plan aangeboden aan Focco Vijselaar, directeur-generaal Bedrijfsleven en Innovatie van het ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat.

By actively seeking cooperation with commercial companies in supporting new entrepreneurs, we can deliver real life knowledge, create a supporting network and enhance the focus on real results.

 

Soon also the contract with the healthcare accelerator Jlabs will be formally signed, and we will continue reaching out to potential supporting partners who can add value to the community of Briskr.

Nimma Hacks:

Decide the future of the Nijmegen Health & Hightech sector with your innovative ideas. The second edition of Nimma Hacks takes place on Saturday December 11th. Nimma Hacks is a 24-hour long hackathon. During this hackathon, teams with different backgrounds and education levels get to grips with a problem from the local Health & Hightech sector.   Nijmegen is known for being an Old City with a Young Vibe, but did you know that it also is the Health & Hightech hotspot of the Netherlands? Keeping healthcare affordable and accessible, providing sufficient and affordable food for everyone: these are just two major challenges of the future, which companies and research institutions in Nijmegen are working on together. Day in, day out with thousands of people from all over the world. We want to contribute to this with this hackathon!   Nimma Hacks starts on Saturday at 10:00AM and it stops at 10:00AM the following morning. An online communication platform is used for this edition. On this platform, teams will have access to their own meeting room and channels for the transfer of information and documentation. It is up to the teams if they want to sit together in a room or at a distance from each other.   During the hackathon, the teams are digitally assisted by various experts from the field. The organization will provide fun energizers during the day and night!   Everyone can participate in teams of 3,4 or 5 people. At the end of the hackathon, teams will deliver an implementation plan that is hands-on and could be implemented immediately.   A good plan deserves to be realized and that is why the partaking parties reserved at least 10.000 euros to actually realize the idea! An independent jury ultimately decides who will win. In addition to the implementation budget the teams can win a balloon flight over the Novio Tech Campus and a whole year of free entrepreneurship at Start-Up Nijmegen (worth 2940.- euros).   If the corona measures allow it, the award ceremony will take place live at a (to be determined) location in Nijmegen on Friday, October 15 2021.   Nimma Hacks is an initiative of the City of Nijmegen and is made possible by Ampleon, Byondis, CITC, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, Novio Tech Campus, NXP, RadboudUMC, Radboud University, The Economic Board, Tourism Veluwe Arnhem Nijmegen and Start Up Nijmegen.   Became curious?
