The Business Angels Network Nijmegen (BANN) is an initiative from Briskr and OostNL to connect angel investors with promising startups in health and hightech in the metropole region Arnhem-Nijmegen. In three events per year 12 startups in total are giving the opportunity to pitch their business idea and investment opportunity to an audience of interested investors. The normal range of investment is between 50K to 300K but in some cases a combination can be made with other investment channels. The event is invite only.
The meetings are held a Slot Doddendael in Ewijk (next to Nijmegen), start around 16:00 and are combined with dinner until 20:00.
For investors
The BANN is a network of 100+ investors interested in health and hightech sectors. Of these usually around 40 investors are present during the meetings. Before the meeting you will receive information about the startups to determine if a visit is justified. Beside the investment opportunities the BANN is also a social gathering including plenty of opportunity to network with other angels during dinner.

neurocognition and mathematical learning algorithms
As blank slates, we come into the world, with a chaos of electrochemical sparks in our brains. Then something magical happens! Gradually, patterns and structures emerge, eventually forming an understanding of our surroundings. Through these developments, babies transform at a breathtaking pace from completely helpless into autonomous beings — curious “learning machines” that actively explore their environment, learn new skills, and engage in meaningful interactions with others. What exactly has happened here? How do these remarkable changes come about in such a short time? And when we unravel the principles of human learning, could we also make AIs learn like humans?
These and other questions will be explored (in Dutch) from two different perspectives at the Science Café on December 9 by Sabine Hunnius and Jim Portegies. Hunnius (RU), with her BabyBRAIN lab, investigates the learning mechanisms and changes in brains and thinking that drive early cognitive development. She does this using advanced baby research and theoretical approaches. Mathematician Portegies (TU/e) examines human learning through the hypothesis that, fundamentally, it is driven by mathematical processes, with a central role for simplification and abstraction. His ultimate goal is to expose these mechanisms and replicate them in practical, universal learning algorithms that would enable robots to learn like a small child.
Throughout the evening, Portuguese artist Jorge da Rocha will invite us into his captivating musical universe of jazz, folk, alternative, and experimental music. He creates this with his unique double bass explorations, blending multiple instruments and electronics. It promises to be an educational evening — a night where babies and math come together.

Ondanks de gure winterse omstandigheden buiten, bood Slot Doddendael een warme en sfeervolle setting voor de laatste BANN-bijeenkomst van het jaar. Met een knapperende haard op de achtergrond vond het plenaire programma plaats in de indrukwekkende Ridderzaal. Martin de Bruin van BANN-partner Qserve Group leidde de sessie en deelde indrukwekkende resultaten van bijna 5 jaar Business Angels Netwerk Nijmegen (uitgelokte investeringen van maar liefst €9,5 miljoen). En hij lichtte met trots de ontwikkelingen van Predica Diagnostics, Breastel en Lizz Health uit. Gastspreker Mark Jolink van EP&C Patent Attorneys gaf een boeiende presentatie over het belang van een IP due diligence bij investeringen. Hij benadrukte hoe essentieel het is om de sterke en zwakke punten van patenten en andere intellectuele eigendomsrechten te begrijpen bij technologische- of wetenschapsgedreven bedrijven.
De bijeenkomst bood ook ruimte voor interactieve rondetafelsessies waarin de vier start-ups verder bevraagd werden door de investeerders en partners. Hier kregen de aanwezigen de kans om dieper in te gaan op de proposities en vragen te stellen aan de pitchers en hun teams. Dit waren de vier start-ups:
De avond werd afgesloten met een uitgebreid culinair vijfgangendiner tijdens het informele walking dinner, waar volop werd genetwerkt en ideeën werden uitgewisseld. We kijken terug op een geslaagde bijeenkomst vol inzichten en verbindingen. Tot de volgende sessie op 10 maart 2025!

Verlegt u de grenzen van uw vakgebied? Een octrooi is essentieel, maar hoewel het bescherming biedt, geeft het u geen toegang tot de markt. Dat wordt wel eens vergeten. Ik leg u graag de verschillen uit tussen bescherming met een octrooi en toegang tot de markt, en geef natuurlijk mee hoe u beide kunt verkrijgen.
Octrooi versus markttoegang
Het verkrijgen van een octrooi is slechts één stap in het innovatieproces. Toegang tot de markt is een volgende. Bestaande octrooien kunnen je de toegang tot de markt beletten. Bovendien beschermen bedrijven die als eerste octrooien verkrijgen in een bepaald technologisch gebied hun technologie vaak breed. Ik leg het uit aan de hand van een simpel, fictief voorbeeld. Stel, u ontwikkelt een stoel met vier poten en u krijgt daarvoor een octrooi. Klaar om naar de markt te gaan, denkt u dan. Jammer genoeg niet! Er kan namelijk al een ander octrooi bestaan op een stoel met een niet-gespecificeerd aantal poten, waardoor u uw versie met vier poten niet zomaar op de markt kunt brengen.
Het is dus belangrijk om te weten welke octrooien u de toegang tot de markt kunnen ontzeggen. En dat leert u in een Freedom to Operate (FTO)-studie.
Onmisbaar: Een Freedom to Operate (FTO) studie
Deze studie geeft inzicht in de risico’s en mogelijkheden. Het biedt een basis om te beslissen hoe u met uw uitvinding de markt kunt betreden. Want zelfs wanneer er octrooien bestaan die u beletten om rechtstreeks naar de markt te gaan, zijn er nog mogelijkheden. Laat dat uw ambitie en motivatie om te innoveren dus niet belemmeren. Tegen de tijd dat de concurrent weet wat u aan het doen bent, heeft u dan al een nieuwe aanvraag in de zak, die op dat moment nog niet gepubliceerd is.
Octrooi als onderhandelingsinstrument
Uw octrooi biedt niet alleen bescherming, maar geeft u ook onderhandelingsmogelijkheden ten aanzien van andere patenthouders en grotere spelers. Zo kun je als start-up of kleinere onderneming een licentie verlenen aan een groter bedrijf, bijvoorbeeld. Of u kunt onderhandelen met de houder van een ander octrooi over een cross-licensing-overeenkomst, waarbij jullie beiden elkaars technologieën mogen gebruiken.
De voorwaarden van licenties worden vastgelegd in onderhandelingen en kunnen variëren. Voor startende bedrijven kan dit een ideale manier zijn om hun product op de markt te brengen en kapitaal en inkomsten te genereren. Daarnaast behoort ook de verkoop van uw technologie en bedrijf natuurlijk tot de mogelijkheden.
Succesvolle innovatie
Het verkrijgen van een octrooi is essentieel voor de bescherming van je innovatie, maar het geeft u niet automatisch toegang tot de markt. Er zijn vaak al andere octrooien actief die uw route naar de markt beïnvloeden. Door een FTO-studie uit te laten voeren en strategisch gebruik te maken van uw octrooi, kun je de juiste stappen zetten.
