She frequently shares her expertise as a guest lecturer at universities and business schools and serves as an advisor to multiple companies.

Het bezoek startte met het afdelingsoverleg van het team, gevolgd door een mooie sessie waarin eerst interim-directeur Wald Been, Noviotech Campus, vertelde over de campus, groei en ontwikkeling en waarbij onze programmamanager Bas Doets een presentatie gaf over Briskr en de toekomst van Health en Hightech in de regio Arnhem-Nijmegen.
Bas lichtte toe hoe Briskr bijdraagt aan het ecosysteem in de regio. Briskr ondersteunt startups en innovatieve MKB-bedrijven met onder meer gerichte workshops, toegang tot risicokapitaal, hulp bij het ontwikkelen van bedrijfsmodellen en validatiediensten. Ondernemen binnen de Health en Hightech-sectoren brengen specifieke vraagstukken met zich mee voor ondernemers. Dat doen we met hulp van een uitgebreid netwerk van partners en supporting partners. Zo stimuleren we samen de regionale economie en helpen we innovatie en ondernemerschap groeien.
On Friday 24 January, the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) at Radboud University welcomed Mayor Hubert Bruls, Alderman for Economic Affairs John Brom, and Health & Hightech Account Manager Monique Schaap-Kersten from the Municipality of Nijmegen for a working visit. During this visit, they gained insight into the importance of fundamental research for innovation and entrepreneurship, learning about the connection between research and innovation at IMM and its impact on Nijmegen, such as contributions to education, business activity, and economic development.
Nijmegen aims to be the city where science, technology, and entrepreneurship reinforce each other. To further develop the innovative ecosystem it is crucial for businesses, knowledge institutions, and government to work together. This will help boost business development, attract talent, and encourage collaboration. “What we have seen here at IMM today demonstrates how essential fundamental research is for innovation and economic development. It is inspiring to see how science and entrepreneurship in Nijmegen converge to create impact for the city. This visit shows that much has already been achieved, and with our collective efforts, we can further strengthen this growing momentum. We are not at the starting point but in the midst of a promising movement”, Mayor Bruls says.
Research and innovation
The Institute for Molecules and Materials, part of the Faculty of Science of Radboud University, focuses on understanding, designing, and manipulating molecules and materials. This fundamental knowledge leads to applications in areas such as energy saving, information technology, and drug development. Thanks to its strong international networks, the institute attracts talent from across the globe, while spin-offs and startups bolster the regional economy. Innovations such as energy-efficient data storage and new materials directly contribute to societal progress. “During this working visit, we had the opportunity to inform, inspire, and connect, which is a valuable chance to demonstrate how fundamental research at IMM contributes to innovation, spin-offs, and strengthening the economic and societal ecosystem in Nijmegen”, the IMM Board says.
Visit
During a tour of the ‘STILL lab’, researchers showcased how breakthroughs in technology and industry can be achieved through research at the smallest scales. The visit also included a stop at the Mercator 3 building on campus, home to several chemical spin-offs. Companies such as Tagworks Pharmaceuticals, Synaffix, Soluxa, and Aerocount presented their journeys, challenges, and successes during short presentations. A roundtable discussion provided a platform for exchanging insights and experiences, benefiting both spin-offs and established companies.
Science park
Many of these spin-offs are based at the Science Park in Nijmegen. This hub provides knowledge-intensive businesses with links to Radboud University and Radboudumc with space to grow. Startup Soluxa, which originated as an IMM spin-off, develops innovative coloured solar panels that can be integrated into building facades. They modify standard solar panels with a nano-coating to achieve the desired colour. Spin-off Synaffix specialises in advanced biotechnology for developing best-in-class antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other targeted medicines, enabling the creation of advanced treatments for diseases that currently lack effective therapies. Startup Aerocount makes air pollution visible with innovative particulate matter sensors that provide insights into air quality, both indoors and outdoors, helping to create healthier living and working environments. Tagworks Pharmaceuticals develops groundbreaking chemical technologies for the treatment of cancer and other diseases. Their innovative company focuses on drug development using ‘click-to-release’ chemistry, enabling drugs to be activated locally and with high precision. “Inspiring to see how companies contribute to the progress of the region. By connecting fundamental research with an entrepreneurial mindset, we create an ecosystem where innovation can thrive, enabling us to make an impact both in the city and at the Science Park,” Mathijs Buddingh’ (Project Manager Science Park) and Antoine Wellink (Head of Radboud Innovation Science) say.
Nijmegen as city of Health & Hightech
Nijmegen aims to further establish itself as leading Health & Hightech city in the Netherlands. The key priorities for the municipality include facilitating the growth of businesses in the city and region, attracting new enterprises and talent, and fostering collaboration. To provide space for businesses driving innovation in healthcare and digital transformation, the municipality is focused on further developing Campus Heijendaal and Noviotech Campus. The continued development of the Science Park is a key component of this strategy. At the heart of the Science Park is the startup programme Mercator Launch, which serves as the cradle of new entrepreneurship. These ventures grow into the employers of the future, establishing themselves in the city and region. Last Tuesday, entrepreneurs gathered for an inspiring workshop hosted by Briskr and Lizanne Jakobs, Business Coach, Speaker Founder/Oprichter Brilliant Work. The session, titled Making Strategic Choices for a Successful 2025!, focused on setting concrete goals and crafting effective strategies to help businesses succeed in the upcoming year and the years to come.
The key takeaway from the workshop was powerful: set clear goals, make them SMART, and design a focused strategy to achieve them. Participants learned how to prioritize tasks, eliminate distractions, and ensure their time, budget and energy are invested in activities that drive business growth.

Met deze jaarlijkse prijzen zetten we inspirerende bedrijven in de spotlights en stimuleren we innovatie, samenwerking en kennisdeling in onze regio. De Cirkel en Startup Cirkel De Cirkel is speciaal voor gevestigde ondernemingen die grondstoffen en producten langer laten meegaan, repareren en slim recyclen en zo een aantoonbare positieve impact op het grondstofverbruik hebben. In de regio Arnhem-Nijmegen staan we voor grote maatschappelijke uitdagingen: een vergrijzende bevolking, stijgende zorgkosten en een tekort aan zorgpersoneel. Het Digital Health Challenge Lab (DHCL) speelt hierop in door technologie te gebruiken voor innovatie in het sociale domein: zorg, welzijn en wonen. DHCL pakt concrete problemen op en werkt samen met bewoners, zorgprofessionals en bedrijven om oplossingen te creëren die écht impact maken. Het DHCL is een initiatief vanuit de programmalijn ‘Gezond Leven’ uit de Regio Deal. Hierin werken overheden, bedrijven en kennisinstellingen samen aan innovatieve oplossingen voor de zorg en het welzijn van inwoners. DHCL richt zich op het ontwikkelen van technologieën en diensten die de zorg dichter bij huis brengen en tegelijkertijd de kwaliteit van leven verbeteren.
Het open innovatieprogramma pakt concrete knelpunten uit de wijk en zorgpraktijk aan door innovatieve oplossingen direct bij betrokken doelgroepen te testen. Dat alles met de ambitie om inwoners langer, gezonder en gelukkig zelfstandig thuis te laten wonen. Met betekenisvolle verbeteringen die haalbaar en betaalbaar zijn.
Hoe komen de challenges tot stand?
Het DHCL werkt volgens een unieke vraaggestuurde aanpak. In plaats van oplossingen naar de zorg te ‘pushen’, worden de uitdagingen eerst vanuit de praktijk opgehaald. Dit gebeurt via interactieve workshops en samenwerkingssessies, waarin inwoners, zorgprofessionals, woningcorporaties en andere stakeholders hun behoeften en frustraties delen. Deze input vormt de basis voor de challenges die bedrijven vervolgens kunnen oppakken.
Floor van de Watering, Programmamanager bij het DHCL en Briskr, legt uit: “Het doel is om concrete problemen te identificeren en innovatieve oplossingen te vinden die daadwerkelijk een verschil maken voor de mensen in de regio. Dit gebeurt in samenwerking met bedrijven die zich kunnen aanpassen aan de behoeften van de zorg- , welzijns- en woningdomeinen.” Partners, zoals Briskr, de Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen OostNL, Radboudumc en diverse woningcorporaties, zoals Talis en Vivare, zijn actief betrokken bij de ontwikkeling en uitvoering van deze challenges.
Binnen het DHCL worden drie hoofddomeinen aangesproken: zorg, welzijn en wonen. De opzet van het lab maakt het mogelijk om het vraagstuk vanuit een integraal perspectief aan te pakken.
Ga de challenge aan als ondernemer
Het DHCL heeft inmiddels al verschillende belangrijke uitdagingen uitgewerkt. Eén van de eerste challenges is de 100@Home-challenge, die zich richt op technologieën die ouderen helpen langer zelfstandig en gelukkig thuis te blijven wonen. Floor vertelt: “Met de open call wilden we bedrijven uit de regio en daarbuiten uitnodigen om hun oplossingen in te dienen. Op 7 november 2024 werd het DHCL feestelijk gelanceerd en inmiddels worden vanuit de open call de eerste gesprekken met ondernemers gevoerd. En daar zaten al geniale ideeën tussen!”
Inmiddels staan er al drie andere challenges live op de website van het DHCL. Tijd om de challenge aan te gaan als ondernemer!
De weg naar innovatie
Hoe ga je die challenge precies aan? Met een pitch bereiken startups, scale-ups en mkb’s die zich aanmelden voor een challenge in één klap 15 invloedrijke organisaties in cure, care, huisvesting, de
overheid en het onderwijs. Bedrijven testen hun innovaties in een praktijkomgeving met gebruikers en stakeholders. Dit geeft hen de kans om hun producten te optimaliseren, de markt te verkennen en hun concurrentiepositie te versterken.”
Als er een match is tussen de innovatie van een bedrijf en de probleemstelling van een opdrachtgever, worden bedrijven ook ondersteunt in de ontwikkeling en opschaling van hun ideeën. Deelname aan het DHCL betekent toegang tot een netwerk van zorgprofessionals, woningcorporaties en andere belangrijke stakeholders in de regio. Het lab faciliteert de samenwerking tussen deze verschillende partijen, waardoor bedrijven nauw kunnen samenwerken met experts om hun innovaties verder te ontwikkelen.
Daarnaast bieden het DHCL en de opdrachtgevers bedrijven financiële ondersteuning. Floor benadrukt: “Zo kunnen bedrijven hun product verfijnen, om het te valideren in een echte zorgsetting, wat essentieel is voor de succesvolle opschaling van hun oplossingen.”
De toekomst van het Digital Health Challenge Lab
De toekomst van het DHCL is veelbelovend. DHCL heeft als doel om na de komende drie jaar hun bewezen methoden op te schalen en de aanpak verder te verankeren in de regio. Floor legt uit: “We willen minimaal 15 challenges succesvol oplossen en dit proces als een duurzame, structurele aanpak voortzetten. Ons doel is om het lab niet alleen in Arnhem-Nijmegen, maar ook in andere regio’s in Nederland toe te passen. Daarvoor moeten we blijven luisteren naar de behoeften van de bewoners en zorgprofessionals. Alleen door deze samenwerking kunnen we technologie succesvol integreren en oplossingen leveren die de zorg écht verbeteren.”
