Origins of Life: from evolution of planets to sparkles of life

Life is the most complex entity in this corner of the universe, and its origin is one of the biggest mysteries in science. Did life happen by chance on Earth? Is our planet the only one in the universe hosting life? To answer these questions, we need to penetrate the fundamental processes that made it possible. It took no magic but billions of years. Life emerged because of the interactions among millions of simpler constituents, in the fine-tuned conditions of a welcoming planet.

On Monday, March 14th, when the Science Café Nijmegen opens its doors again, we will walk back the origin of life, starting from the formation of inhabitable planets up to the aggregation of the first life forms. Planetary physicist Dennis Höning (Vrije Universiteit) studies the evolution of planets, modelling the exchange of carbonates between the mantle and the atmosphere. Subduction zones and thermal spots are among the factors that allow for the accumulation of enough carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to keep our planet habitable. By applying his models to exoplanetary data, he can assist the search for life beyond our Solar System. Omer Markovitch, chemist from Groningen University, will introduce us to the complex mechanisms of prebiotic evolution. He focuses on the numerous steps that matter must accomplish before life sparkles, in the process that took us from simple molecules into cellular structures. This evening, from 7.30 pm onwards, we are welcomed back with the musical improvisations and ‘duologues’ of Daniël van der Duim and Loek van den Berg.

Implementing AI to improve Life!
Artificial intelligence is one of the most important driving forces in innovation at this moment, especially in specialised domains. AI is in some cases better than the radiologist or pathologist to diagnose cancer in medical images. Machine learning helps to forecast quality issues in chips manufacturing. And in energy AI helps us save energy by better predictions of the need for heating.

During this event we will discuss how AI is changing the most important economic clusters of the Arnhem-Nijmegen region: Health, High Tech and Energy.

Program
In addition to key notes from Marcel van Gerven and Catholijn Jonker, we offer a number of short pitches from both science and business in the plenary session. Followed by two rounds of parallel sessions that will look at the subject from a Health, High Tech and Energy point of view.

Our Key note speakers are:
Marcel van Gerven; Prof. AI & Chair of the department of Artificial Intelligence at Donders Institute
Catholijn Jonker; Professor of Interactive Intelligence at TU Delft / Faculty EEMCS

Hybrid event
We expect the RIVM guidelines will allow us to host a physical meeting at Novio Tech Campus in Nijmegen with networking, drinks & snacks afterwards. The plenary parts of the event will be streamed online as well.

Good to know
Presentations are in English & the entrance is free (registration upfront is needed though). We welcome new guests, so please feel free to pass on this invitation to relevant people in your network!

A few days before the event we will send an email from smb@radboudumc.nl with more detailed info on the workshop (you might need to check your spam box).

We look forward to meet you!

You can register here and choose parallel sessions.

Time to work on your networking skills!
Networking is part of your job. When meeting new potential business partners, ambassadors or clients it is essential that you can tell a story about your proposition especially for this audience. This requires a combination of listening and storytelling skills. In this workshop we’ll work on both.

We start with finetuning and adapting your story for any audience. Then we practice how to tell this story to the right people in a networking setting. First defining the right people and then finding out how to get into a conversation with them and maybe even more important getting out when they turn out not to be the right fit. And how/when do you succesfully follow-up on the meeting?

This will be an interactive workshop with ample opportunity to try out new versions of your stories and tactics to tell them. One thing is guaranteed; At the end of the workshop there will be at least 10 people in your network who can tell a version of your story. #networkingstartsnow

About Frank Smallegange
Frank is the pitch coach for (technical) start-ups. He was trained as a chemical engineer and has extensive work experience as a designer and builder in IT. He is also a master of improvisation and storytelling. For this, he took courses from Las Vegas to Berlin. This combination makes that Frank understands what a pitch is about and he can show you how to engage an audience.

Live event
We aim to organize this workshop in a live setting and will take all necessary RIVM/national measures into account. If a physical workshop is not yet possible, we will reschedule to a later date.

Good to know
We finish off with drinks & bites. This workshop is free of charge and facilitated in English. Please register upfront!

Ondertekening

Het Bestuursakkoord is 3 februari ondertekend bij Connectr in Arnhem door Peter Kerris (Provincie Gelderland), Ahmed Marcouch (The Economic Board) en Hubert Bruls (Groene Metropoolregio).

Platform technologies are considered a valuable tool to improve efficiency and quality in drug product development. The basic idea is that a platform, in combination with a risk-based approach, is the most systematic method to leverage prior knowledge for a given new molecule. Learn more about the innovative technology platforms from our three presenters and how you can benefit from these. A delicious lunch will be provided during this interesting session.

The platform of Immunoprecise supports its business partners in their quest to discover and develop novel antibodies against a broad range of classes of disease targets. Glycostem has taken a new approach to cellular immunotherapy manufacturing and will introduce the difference. And Single Cell Discoveries will present single-cell sequencing platforms as a service; you will learn what single-cell sequencing is and how it was developed.

ImmunoPrecise
Highly diverse functional therapeutic antibody lead panel selection by sourcing chicken and human B-cell repertoires. Therapeutic antibody campaigns heavily benefit from high diversity, not only on the sequence level, but also with respect to epitope coverage and functionality. This aspect should be taken into account at each step of a discovery program. The presented case study focuses on the generation of a diversified panel of antibodies directed against a transmembrane protein which is described to play a role in the development of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases via different mechanisms of actions. Leveraging two distinct, robust, species-agnostic antibody discovery platforms selected to circumvent immune tolerance, we were able to rapidly isolate a diverse panel of multi-species, target-specific antibodies from our in-house human scFv-repertoires and chicken B cell pools. Subsequent high-throughput characterizations facilitated the binning of antibodies based on the epitope landscape profile and functionality for follow-up in in vitro proof of concept studies to address the different therapeutic options, including ADC-based approaches and bispecific-oriented strategies.

Single Cell Discoveries

Single-cell sequencing is a rapidly growing field that gains more and more interest from academia, biotech, and pharma. At Single Cell Discoveries, we offer multiple single-cell sequencing platforms as a service. Join our talk to find out what single-cell sequencing is, how it was developed, and which platforms we offer. We will discuss the biology of our single-cell platforms and how we work as a service provider.

Glycostem

Glycostem has taken a new approach to cellular immunotherapy manufacturing and will introduce the difference. Glycostem Therapeutics is focused on the development of stem cell-derived Natural Killer cells (NK cells) as a medicinal asset in the fight against cancer. NK cells are the new star in the domain of cellular immunotherapy, due to their tightly regulated “natural killing” of cancer cells; they play an important role in the control and even cure of both solid and hematological malignancies, like Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and Multiple Myeloma (MM).

In our Health Challenge Hub we bring together current and future challenges of healthcare professionals and the innovative solutions of entrepreneurs with expertise in the field of Digital Health.

‘Innovation Challenges’

Too often innovation in healthcare starts with a solution looking for a problem, leading to expensive pilots and little impact. In the Nijmegen area we think that especially in healthcare a pilot should start with professionals and patients defining their need.

Based on this need we define the challenges for entrepreneurs to respond to with innovations that are a solution to a problem, instead of the other way around. These solutions can be start-ups developing new technologies, but also scale-ups and grown-ups with existing solutions that just need to be tailored to healthcare.

Briskr helps define the challenge, scouts innovative solutions and supports in making the match, aiming at the creation of a new market with clients willing to pay for the solution!
