Good to know

This event is free of charge, registration is needed as a maximum of 12 participants can take part in this session. Please note you have to travel to/from Helmond with your own transport.

ORGANOIDS

Mini-organs made in the lab

Growing organs in a petri dish? What sounds like science fiction has become reality. In 2009 Dutch researchers at Utrecht University had grown what looked like a real gut outside of the body. It was a breakthrough that would revolutionize biomedical research. By now, a diversity of organoids, ranging from gut and kidney to lung and even brain tissue, can be grown from stem cells. These tiny 3D-structures reproduce the complexity of real organs and serve as models to understand the development of diseases and design new drugs. Will we soon be able to grow full-sized organs for transplantation?

On Monday, 11th of December the Science Café will dive into the world of these mini-organs with two scientists presenting on the present and future of organoids. Ellen van den Bogaard (Radboudumc) and her group grow little skin pieces in the lab to study the underlying mechanisms of skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. With their skin organoids, they develop new treatment options and help reduce the number of animal experiments. Bart Spee (UU) and his team develop mini-livers to study drug toxicity. His group also combines liver-organoids with 3D-bioprinting to create complex structures that even more closely resemble real liver tissue. The intriguing science will be accompanied by the compelling beats of the Arnhem-based pop-rock group Boter bij de Vis.

SMB Network Meeting Transforming (elderly) care together

Healthcare is on the brink of a crisis. Without intervention the number of people working in healthcare would grow from 1 in 7 employees to 1 in 4, straining our labor market to its limits. The main cause is the ageing society and a shrinking pool of young healthcare workers.

You can also say we’re facing a potential, especially in elderly care. It’s time for innovative solutions! Technology can support this. However, we won’t solve the labor market problems with more innovative technology alone. A transformation of care is needed and this cannot be done from 1 sector alone. We also need cutting-edge living and care models that boost independence and harness the power of informal care. To succeed, it is necessary to pair up with all parties active in in the field of health care and the living environment.

During this SMB meeting we will discuss several regional actions to fundamentally improve (elderly) care including the digital health challenge lab (DHCL).

In DHCL the frustrations and desires (challenges) of residents, housing associations, healthcare professionals, healthcare organizations around their (own) health, healthcare supply and the healthcare process are collected, answered and solved. On the basis of these challenges, companies can specifically develop innovative products and/or services for which there is actual demand and support. After all, a challenge is a problem with a business case!

BANN, Business Angels Network Nijmegen

The Business Angels Network Nijmegen (BANN) is an initiative from Briskr and OostNL to connect angel investors with promising startups in health and hightech in the metropole region Arnhem-Nijmegen. In three events per year 12 startups in total are giving the opportunity to pitch their business idea and investment opportunity to an audience of interested investors. The normal range of investment is between 50K to 300K but in some cases a combination can be made with other investment channels. The event is invite only.

The meetings are held a Slot Doddendael in Ewijk (next to Nijmegen), start around 16:00 and are combined with dinner until 20:00.

For investors

The BANN is a network of 100+ investors interested in health and hightech sectors. Of these normally around 40 investors are present during the meetings. Before the meeting you will receive information about the startups to determine if a visit is justified. Beside the investment opportunities the BANN is also a social gathering including plenty of opportunity to network with other angels during dinner.

Terugblik BANN bijeenkomst 14 november

Op dinsdag 14 november kwam het Business Angels Netwerk Nijmegen (kortweg BANN) opnieuw samen op de mooie locatie Slot Doddendael in Ewijk. Hier verzamelden Business angels en partners van de BANN om vier veelbelovende startups, die op zoek zijn naar funding en support, te horen pitchen.

Mathijs Buddingh’ van BANN partner Gemeente Nijmegen leidde ons soepel door het plenaire programma.

Naast de 4 pitch video’s van de ondernemers praatte Bob van den Berg van Tworby ons bij over zijn reis na zijn pitch bij de BANN in 2020; oa over het winnen van de Ignite Award en een succesvolle deelname aan Dragons’ Den + over zijn huidige financieringsbehoefte.

Daarna volgden de rondetafel sessie’s waarbij angels en partners vragen konden stellen en pitchers meer informatie konden geven over hun propositie. We sloten af met wederom een heerlijk culinair walking dinner met 5 gangen.

How to get accepted for reimbursement by Dutch healthcare system?

Brilliant business models in healthcare

As a healthcare entrepreneur, you might possess an excellent product designed to enhance healthcare quality and efficiency. However, selling it could prove challenging. The adoption of new technologies is a decision that involves healthcare organizations, professionals, insurance companies, and occasionally, even patients. The separation of costs and returns, often residing in different hands, complicates the reimbursement process. Consequently, this complexity may lead to a diminished interest from potential investors.

Reimbursement 
This workshop will focus on reimbursement in healthcare systems in general and specifically on the Dutch healthcare system. It will give insight in the way the healthcare system is organized and what you should know if you want to get reimbursementfor your innovation!

What’s in it for me?
Jeroen will also show a lot of examples of the sort of brilliant business models which are needed to improve healthcare and realize the quadruple aim: better health, nicer treatment, happier healthcare workers and reduced cost. Jeroen Kemperman is sr. Manager Strategy & Business Development at Achmea/Zilveren Kruis and writer of several books on business models. He does this from his background in industrial engineering as well as from his practical perspective of working in healthcare. For his books he has researched working business models in the complex world of world-wide healthcare.

During the workshop we will hand out the recommended book ‘Brilliant business models in Healthcare’ from Jeroen Kemperman, Jeroen Geelhoed & Jennifer op ’t Hoog (or in Dutch: ‘Briljante Businessmodellen in de Zorg’).

Financiering voor proof-of-concept: EnginX maakt efficiënter ontwerp van machines mogelijk

Slimme software startup uit Nijmeegse biedt oplossing in tijden van personeelstekorten 

EnginX uit Nijmegen heeft financiering opgehaald voor de ontwikkeling van haar engineering-software. Met deze software kunnen engineers machines in de ontwerpfase samenstellen met de juiste componenten en zijn zij niet langer aangewezen op spreadsheets, papieren catalogi of losse documenten. Een groot voordeel in tijden van tekort aan (technisch) talent. Met een financiering van het Vroegefasefinanciering Gelderland (VFF Gelderland) kan het bedrijf de software geschikt maken voor launching customers. Oost NL beheert VFF Gelderland.

Welke pomp past het best op dit aanzetstuk? En met welk radarwerk optimaliseer je een aandrijfmechanisme? De software van EnginX digitaliseert tijdrovend zoek- en rekenwerk in een markt met een groot tekort aan technisch personeel, legt Saskia Eijkelhof, CEO van het jonge bedrijf uit: “Nu is het vaak nog dagelijkse praktijk dat engineers uit veel verschillende bronnen informatie bij elkaar moeten zoeken om een machine of machineonderdeel te ontwerpen. Door een uitgebreide database van componenten aan te leggen, die je ook nog eens virtueel kan koppelen aan een eigen ontwerp, is het vinden van geschikte onderdelen veel efficiënter.”

EnginX ziet vooral vraag bij ‘Original Equipment Manufacturers’ (OEM’s), machinebouwers voor de maakindustrie. “Zeker in de voedselproductie, agrarische sector, energie en ruimtevaart worden complexe machines gebouwd met veel onderdelen. Met onze software kunnen engineers testen of bepaalde combinaties goed werken, zonder dat ze daadwerkelijk het systeem hoeven te bouwen.”

Financiering om launching customers dichter bij te brengen

EnginX is ontstaan bij en gevestigd in Mercator Launch in Nijmegen en is een spinoff van de Radboud Universiteit. Via Orion en Briskr werd het bedrijf gewezen op de mogelijkheden van VFF Gelderland. “We gebruiken de financiering om een slimme database met componenten te bouwen voor launching customers, zodat de software direct de juiste componenten gebruikt in hun berekeningen. Dat is een belangrijke doorbraak voor ons”, vertelt Eijkelhof over de financiering. 

Matthijs Berkelaar, investment manager Tech bij Oost NL: “Het tekort aan technisch personeel is voor de maakindustrie een hoge prioriteit. In Oost-Nederland heeft de maakindustrie een belangrijke positie. EnginX heeft de potentie om de maakindustrie te versterken door middel van digitalisering en daarmee de productiviteit en efficiency te verhogen. Naast financiering blijven we de ondernemers ondersteunen met de groei en opschaling van het bedrijf.”

Proof-of-conceptfonds VFF Gelderland

Het Proof-of-conceptfonds VFF Gelderland richt zich op ondernemers die een bijdrage leveren aan oplossingen voor maatschappelijke vraagstukken. VFF Gelderland is een instrument voor innovatieve ondernemers dat door de provincie Gelderland en de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemers is gefinancierd.

Oost NL beheert het fonds en werkt daarbij samen met lokale startersinitiatieven voor startups binnen hun sector: StartLife gericht op de agrifood sector, Briskr gericht op de life sciences, health en high tech sector en Orion gericht op de sectoren energie, creatief en ICT/smart industry/AI. In een eerder stadium kon EnginX gebruik maken van het Startupfonds Gelderland.
