Effectively and just

Our lives are increasingly global, as we connect across the planet in countless ways. These connections create systemic changes that have different and unequal impacts in the world. They also happen faster and on a scale larger than our current international institutions and practices can handle. We urgently need more effective and legitimate ways to deal with the big global issues we face, like climate change. But how to govern the globe better?

On Monday March 11th, the Science Café will explore today’s complex, polycentric global governance and discuss some promising innovations with two of the leading experts in the field. Jan Aart Scholte (LEI), professor of Global Transformations and Governance Challenges, will introduce us to his holistic view on globalization and its governance and share his insights on the central question of the evening. Rakhyun Kim (UU) will explain the concepts of Earth System Governance. Within this project he analyzes the network of actors and their interactions in the world’s fragmented governance system, and studies the potential of ‘global goals’ as a steering mechanism in this web. Throughout the evening, Pessanha will spin his vinyl, immersing The Shamrock into atmospheres of the Global South.

We would like to invite you to our upcoming workshop: Patenting in health and hightech to create value and competitive advantage. The competition in these sectors steadily increases and the possession of intellectual property rights has shown to boost company growth and increases the chances of obtaining financing.

IP strategic aspects

The first part of the workshop is focused on IP strategic aspects for companies at their different stages of growth, on how to identify an invention, on the procedure and related costs for the filing of a patent application and prosecuting it up to grant and validation.

The sky is the limit. Of toch niet? …

What do people with autism and ADHD have in common? Seemingly nothing, when judging by the stereotypes of a socially anxious introvert and a restless extrovert, which unfortunately still stick with these disorders. This might lead to the conclusion that they have a different origin. Fascinatingly, researchers have found that both neurodevelopmental disorders may be caused by similar changes in the brain and might thus be regarded as ‘two sides of the same coin’.

Annelies Spek (Autism Expertise Center) and Jan Buitelaar (Radboud University) will shed light on this topic in the Science Café on Monday, 5th of February. Annelies Spek is a clinical psychologist and expert of autism in adults. As a senior researcher she investigates autism and its intersections with other disorders. Jan Buitelaar is a psychiatrist and professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In his research he uses neuroimaging and molecular methods to study ADHD and autism. In an open discussion (in Dutch), the two experts will explore the commonalities and differences of both disorders together with the audience. To calm down your brain again, the evening is accompanied by the soothing jazz of the Norman Samuels Trio.
